ST. IGNATIUS – The Mission lady netters are hitting their stride early on as the team continues to perform well early in the season. The team didn’t let near-freezing wind chills cool them down as they breezed past Darby 5-1 Thursday. Coach Sara Ison says she’s really pleased with them at this early stage.

“We’re a very young team, but from the beginning I knew they had potential,” Ison said.

She added that success early on has been very exciting for her and the team.

“We’re very divisional and state-minded,” Ison said, “but this is nice to see.”

She says that their success in practice has carried over to the court on game day. She added that the team’s hard work is paying dividends for them.

The Lady Bulldogs handed Darby a beating, only dropping one match to the Tigers. Sarah Bowers had an all-out battle in a singles match with Brianna Massey, winning 6-1, 3-6, 6-0. Mission’s Jane Makepeace defeated Kailey Bergren 6-4, 6-4, giving a solid performance.

The only Mission loss occurred in doubles action, when Julie Abrahamsen and Brittani Muir defeated Sydney Allard and Ashley Courville 6-0, 6-0. In the other doubles match, Katie Hogge and Daniela Raith of Mission defeated Abbey Pallis and Melissa Dowdy 6-4, 7-5 to give the team the 5-1 win.

Mission will seek to continue their early season success when they travel to Bigfork on April 21, and then Cutbank at home on April 22.

Coach Ison has high hopes for the upcoming matches.

“I’m excited,” she said.

You win some and you lose some, or so the old adage goes. Thus was the case for Mission's tennis teams Tuesday as the girls picked up a 4-2 victory over Valley Christian while the boys fell, 5-1.

Singles were strength of the Lady Bulldogs Tuesday as Mission won all four of its individual matchups against Valley Christian to earn a 4-2 win. Mission's No. 1 girl's singles player, Sarah Bowers, was impressive in her win as she took down Adrienne Newton in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.

Jane Makepeace had a little more trouble with her matchup as she needed a tie-break win to get past Alina Jung, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2. Mackenzie Trudeau picked up a win in straight sets as she defeated Jodie Satterlee, 6-2, 6-3 and Morgan Andres had little trouble in her match as she took down Jami Sofil, 6-1, 6-3.

The Mission boys had a rough day as only defending B-C state champion Spencer Ahlborn picked up a win as he defeated Josiah Petersen in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. The Mission doubles team of Trail Bundy and Karl Daniels put up a tough fight in their matchup as they won the opening set in a tie-break, but still fell to Jordan Potter and Matthew Bohlken, 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 6-4.

Mission's tennis squads were in action at Bigfork Monday evening. Results were not available at press time.
