Group works to create ice rink
POLSON — More opportunities for recreation are in the works as organizers are in the process of securing $4 million to create a multi-functional ice rink in Polson.
With a $25,000 donation kicked in by local businesswoman Carmine Mowbray, a $1 million matching grant available at the end of the project, and Ridgewater land donated by Mike Maddy, $3 million is still needed to ice the deal. Mission Valley Ice Arena Association visionaries are hoping to complete the rink within two or three years.
The group is calling for volunteer grant writers to come on board to secure funding, which is augmented by a variety of fundraisers, such as a raffle for an Ice Quilt and the annual Rock Skipping Contest held in the springtime by Kevin Avison of Cove Deli.
The rink will provide year-round opportunities for figure skating, ice hockey and curling. Organizers believe it will also provide a much-needed economic boost during slow winter months by drawing people to the Polson area.
The Association recently established their 501c3 status and are getting ideas from Missoula and Kalispell ice rinks.
The group is also consulting with WGM Group for the engineering, planning and surveying, as well as the Missoula-based Paradigm v2 Architecture.
The group held a scoping meeting in Polson on Nov. 9 to share information with the public and answer questions.
