ELMO — Sisters Ihte, Kehtsin and Nihani Stiffarm from Fort Belknap all danced in the tiny tots category at the Standing Arrow Powwow, even though tiny Nihani had just learned to walk.
“It’s the first powwow where they’ve all danced together,” their proud dad said.
Dancers of all ages came to the 33rd Annual Standing Arrow Powwow, from golden agers to tiny tots. Emcee Leslie Caye kept things moving with energy, jokes and movie trivia.
Grand entries were at 7 p.m. on July 20, 1 and 7 p.m. on July 21 and 1 p.m. on July 22. Head man dancer was Jason Louie and head woman dancer was Nunkinka Manuel; and the powwow honored Helen Charlo, the oldest Ksanka member, on Saturday evening. Chief Cliff was the host drum and Young Grey Horse, Browning, was the visiting co-host drum.
Alvina Tenas organized the parade at 11 a.m. on July 21 and said they had a good turnout.
The Stickgame Capitol of the World tournament began registration at 10 a.m. on July 21 at $150 per team with a guaranteed $10,000 payout. The stick game began at 1 p.m. and was still going strong at 10:30 p.m.July 22.
Another special event was a singing contest with prizes of $7,000, $5,000, $3,000 and $1,000 for the first four places.
Other events included a co-ed softball tournament honoring Leila Clairmont-Perez, and a youth 3-on-3 basketball contest that boasted 167 contestants.
