The Charlo Vikings had a little business to attend to before heading into the holiday break last week as they defeated Two Eagle River at home before being handed their first loss of the season at Noxon.

“We did pretty good against Two Eagle, but we were a little too tired against Noxon,” head coach Mike Brown said. “I’m pleased with how they play hard from the tip ‘til the buzzer; (it’s) a good sign for our team down the road.”

Against TER, it was a tight game throughout the first half as the Eagles hung close with Charlo, trailing 39-34 at halftime. The Eagles continued to keep the game close in the third, outscoring the Vikings 22-21 to pull within four points.

Charlo held Two Eagle to 13 points in the fourth, helping them win, 78-69.

Stephen Delaney played a major role for Charlo, scoring 14 points, 20 rebounds and six blocks. Teammates Webb O’Neill and Kolten Andrews both added 20 points a piece, while Dillon Delaney finished with 15.

“Stephen is doing a great job averaging 15 to 20 rebounds a game, but we need other guys to step up,” Brown said.

For the Eagles, Clayton Malatare led his team with 19 points, while Artie Mendoza added 15. Cole Noble also broke double-digits with 11. With the loss Two Eagle River fell 4-1.

On the road against Noxon, the Red Devils’ aggressive defense eventually wore down Charlo in the second half, allowing Noxon to hand Charlo its first loss of the season, 66-52.

“Noxon rebounded well and had aggressive defense,” Brown explained. “We don’t mind that style of play, but it caught up to us.”

Noxon shot out to an early 15-10 lead after the first quarter, but Charlo rallied, outscoring Noxon 12-9 in the second quarter to climb within two points of the lead at the half.

Charlo struggled to keep up in the third quarter, scoring only eight points to Noxon’s 17. The Vikings rallied in the fourth, putting up 27 points, but it was too late for Charlo (5-1), losing it’s first game of the season.

A trio of Vikings finished with double-digits. Andrews led the way with 17, Dillon Delaney added 15 and Tra Ludeman contributed 10.

With Christmas break in full swing, Brown says his team will be hard at work preparing for district powerhouse Superior, who they play Jan. 6 at home.

“Everyone’s staying in, and only a couple are leaving,” Brown said. “They wanted to practice so we’ll do it.”

To this point in the season Brown says he’s happy with his team’s chemistry and work ethic on the court.

“I’m really pleased with the effort,” he said. “I know we can finish strong, we just got a lot of room to grow. We’re still at the bottom looking up, but we’ll make a push at the end.”
