CONRAD – What was originally scheduled as a busy week with lots of valuable mat time for the Ronan Chiefs changed once the snow began flying. The Chiefs were supposed to grapple at the Eureka Quad and duel with Missoula Big Sky before heading off to the Conrad Duals over the weekend.
“We did make the trip over to Conrad for the Class B duals,” head coach Dustyn Azure said.
At Conrad, the Chiefs went 2-3 overall, first falling to Fairfield on Friday before rebounding to down Boulder 63-9 the same day.
On Saturday, the Chiefs fell to Great Falls High JV and Conrad before upending Townsend.
At Conrad, 160-pound grappler Quentin Denton set the new state record for quickest pin in the 160-pound category by pinning an opponent in five seconds, beating the previous record of six seconds set by a Huntley Project wrestler in 1990.
Against Fairfield, Denton pinned Jacob Wagner in 1:59, while the Chiefs won the 152, 189, 215, and Heavyweight by forfeit.
Ronan took down a small Boulder team that had only two grapplers at the meet. Colby Roberts (189) defeated Robert Smartnick in a 6-5 decision, while Chase Rhine (119) fell to Jared Probert in an 11-8 decision.
Ronan won 98, 125, 130, 140, 145, 152, 160, 171, 215, and Heavyweight by forfeit.
On Saturday, Ronan first matched up with Great Falls High JV, where the Chiefs picked up seven wins, but lost by eight points, 48-40.
Rhine (119) pinned Dalton Meeks in 4:30, while Brandon DuMont pinned Brandon Albert in nine seconds.
Conner Benn (130) picked up a win after pinning Tony Lozano in 1:40, while Ronnie Cullis won by major decision over Brandon Bilbrey, 15-4.
Dustin Goldsby (152), Denton (160) and Roberts (189) also picked up wins.
Later that day, Ronan took on tournament host Conrad, where Roberts (189) was the only win other than by forfeit. Roberts pinned Tyler Nelson in 52 seconds.
Ronan won 98, 152, 160 and 171 by forfeit, while Conrad won 105, 119, and 135 by forfeit.
The Chiefs capped off the tournament with a 51-27 win over Townsend, where Trae Garcia (98), Rhine (119), Benn (130), Goldsby (152), Denton (160), Savas Baeir (171) and Michael Irvine (215) all picked up wins.
Ronan faced off with Sentinel High School Jan. 24 and host Polson at home Jan. 27 on senior night. The Chiefs then travel to Darby on Saturday for a tournament.
“We are going to shake off the weekend competition and move our focus to this week’s challenges,” Azure said.
