RONAN – Ronan City Council members continued to look over every line of the city’s budget, which was about an inch thick, to ensure that everything was in order during the last regular meeting. They held another work meeting later in the week to continue studying the budget.
City Clerk Kaylene Melton said the budget looked much like it did last year, which was enough to function without much leftover, but department heads would like to accomplish a few things this year including maintenance on the Public Works Department shop, so councilmembers were looking for ways to save money.
The council hasn’t yet found many areas where it was possible to reduce spending, although they plan to continue looking. It was stated that the Public Works Department already reduced staff size from seven to five. Ronan Police Chief Ken Weaver advised against cutting staff in his department.
The need for a savings account was also addressed at the meeting. It was stated that the city should start trying to save for expensive future necessities like fire trucks which cost thousands of dollars.
The cost of maintaining the Ronan City Court was discussed. Councilmembers talked about the judge’s salary at $1,050 per month, which was noted as a typical salary for that position.
The next regular meeting is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 5, at 6 p.m.
