POLSON — Planes droned around the Polson Airport on Saturday morning, landing and taking off, for the Polson Fly-In.
Flying over from Ferndale was 86-year-old B. R. “Bernie” Gregoire in his 1999 RV-8, a homebuilt airplane made by John Stene.
“I’ve been a pilot since I was 17,” Gregoire said. “My brother taught me how to fly.”
Gregoire’s brother was a United States Air Force flying instructor during World War II.
Float planes, antique aircraft, including a 1928 Travel Air, experimental aircraft, homebuilts and helicopters were all represented.
“Pilots come from all over,” Mauri Morin said.
Morin belongs to Chapter 1122 of the Experimental Aircraft Association that hosts the fly-in.
Planes visited from Missoula, Kalispell, Eastern Washington and even Spokane. The fly-in is a social event for area pilots. It’s also an opportunity for the EAA to welcome visitors to the airport, visit with the pilots and check out the planes.
The EAA also held a pancake breakfast fundraiser and raffled off prizes.
