POLSON — Denise Juneau, Superintendent of Public Instruction for Montana, recently announced that $592,000 in competitive grants awarded through the Mathematics and Science Partnerships Program will go toward improving instruction in four schools, including Polson School District No. 23. Other grantees include two Bozeman Public Schools and Montana Tech.
In Polson, grant funding will go to the Flathead Reservation Algebra Collaborative, known as FRACtion, to address implementing Common Core State Standards through the Standards of Mathematical Practices. Project activities will consist of a summer workshop and follow-up activities that will engage administrators and teachers collaboratively in joint meetings.
All of the one-year grant projects will improve K-12 students’ math and science skills and the instructional ability of math and science teachers. Additionally, these partnerships will give school districts and higher education faculty joint responsibility for improving Montana’s math and science instruction.
“Preparing Montana students for future careers in science, technology, engineering and math requires Montana teachers to have access to high-quality professional development opportunities and resources,” Juneau said. “This grant means more teachers will be able to prepare Montana students for the rapidly-evolving workforce.”
