POLSON — The Polson Police Department continues its investigation into a stabbing incident on March 17, which left one 17-year-old male in the hospital and another 17-year-old in juvenile custody charged with aggravated assault.
Polson Police Chief Wade Nash said officers are following up on leads and conducting a couple more interviews before they submit their evidence to Deputy Lake County Attorney Cory Allen for the county attorney’s office to decide if or what charges will be filed.
The victim, who had six stab wounds, was taken to St. Joseph’s Medical Center. When a Lifeflight helicopter could not get through due to fog, he was taken by ambulance to St. Patrick’s Hospital in Missoula.
The other juvenile appeared in Justice of the Peace Chuck Wall’s court for a juvenile hearing on March 26 and was released into his parents’ custody because the investigating officer told Wall he believed the juvenile acted in self-defense.
The self-defense statute is a relatively new law, and it’s up to the PPD to prove or disprove it, according to PPD Assistant Chief John Stevens.
The victim’s mother said doctors told her the EMTs got her son to the hospital just in time. After removal of his spleen and other procedures, the juvenile was a patient at St. Patrick Hospital for about a week and is doing as well as can be expected, she said. He will begin physical therapy this week to regain use of his arm.
Barbara Monaco, Chief Juvenile Probation Officer for District 20, explained that until a juvenile case is filed in District Court, she can’t comment. Neither juvenile’s name has been released.
“It will be a challenging case,” Nash added.
Both Nash and Stevens have asked members of the public with information regarding the case to call 883-8212.
