RONAN — Ace was in the fitting chute, and Laurel Rigby was doing some last minute beautification on the black steer before the market beef show on Wednesday, July 29.
Ace is short for Ace of Spades, and Rigby said she has shown him in several jackpots, impromptu steer shows, around the area — Fort Benton, Spokane, Washington, Kalispell and Lolo — so he’s an old hand at the show ring.
At 1,300 pounds, Ace is “just where I want him to be,” Rigby said.
Although the industry is looking for bigger cattle, she prefers a more moderately sized calf like Ace.
She finished out her 4-H career in good standing, and Ace sold for $4.20 per pound.
This is Rigby’s 10th year in 4-H; she began when she was 9 years old. She recently graduated from high school so she’ll be heading off to college in the fall. Between her Future Farmers of America and 4-H membership and day-to-day learning living on a ranch, Rigby earned a full-ride livestock judging scholarship to Casper College in Casper, Wyoming.
Rigby is on the Ronan FFA livestock judging team that will go to nationals in Louisville, Kentucky, in October.
