RONAN — The summer pasture workshop, “Pasturing for Profits” will be held in Ronan on Aug. 20-21. For the first time ever, renowned grazing researcher, author and rancher Jim Gerrish will join us in Lake County to share practical ways to increase the sustainability of our family agricultural operations in Western Montana. This workshop will cater to almost all agricultural producers in Western Montana because the majority of the agricultural operations in Western Montana have at least some pastures.

Dozens of similar events have been held over the past three years, bringing in speakers from around the country. Interest in these events has continued to grow as ag producers continue to search for innovative ways to increase their sustainability and maintain profits on smaller and smaller acreage. In particular, Western Montana has become an epicenter for pasture management expertise. There has been a growing interest across the nation in locally produced food, soil health and sustainable agricultural practices that benefit wildlife habitat, clean air and water and aesthetic values in our rural communities. This workshop is a continuation of our Winter Grazing Seminar that we held in Missoula in January which drew 180 local ranchers. In order to maximize learning opportunities, attendance at this workshop will be capped at 100.

The workshop will include tours of pastures that are using innovative grazing practices, including some that move their animals on a daily basis to improve their pastures without the use of chemicals or fertilizers.

The workshop will be held at the Ronan Fairgrounds on Aug. 20-21. Cost is $30 and includes a catered lunch on Thursday from Stella’s Bakery in Ronan. Please call 406-676-2841 ext. 111 to register.
