COLUMBIA FALLS — On Saturday, the Polson track and field teams kicked off their first season in more than four decades without head coach Bob Gunderson, who retired after last year. And the athletes showed they’re ready to compete under the direction of new head coach Mike Ellis, who’s stepped up from his position as throwing coach to fill Gunderson's spot.
While the Polson boys ended up fifth, scoring only 50 to meet host Columbia Falls’ 96, the girls fared better, winning with a score of 84 to second-place Cut Bank’s 81.33.
Anna DiGiallonardo led the Lady Pirates, taking first in the 100 and 200-meter races, second in the 400 (Madeline Hewston was fourth) and fourth in the long jump. Claudia Hewston won the 1,600 in 5:45.37, took third in the 800-meter race and third in the pole vault with a 7-foot, 6-inch leap. Polson took second behind Plains in the 400 and 1,600-meter relays. For the boys, Vince Digiallonardo led the way with second-place finishes in the 100-meter and the long jump. Paul McClurg wasn’t far behind in the 100 and took third. Clay Rubel came in second in shot put with a 45-foot, 11-inch toss, and the Pirates’ 400-meter relay team finished second behind Bigfork.
Polson’s next track meet is the Flathead Invitational Tuesday, April 10, in Kalispell.
