The Mission Valley Mariners capped off their Missoula tournament run over the weekend with an explosive shutout of the Class A Missoula Mavs Sunday evening.
A four-run first inning got the Mariners off to a solid start as Kade Schutzmann was hit by a pitch, sending another batter home. He also doubled for two runs later in the seventh inning. Derek Peel tripled, scored one and added an RBI, while Jacob Harrod turned in a pair of singles and an RBI. The Mariners wound up on top 9-0.
Earlier in the week, a back-and-forth American Legion Class A baseball battle with the Bitterroot Bucs in Florence ended in the Mariners splitting the doubleheader 9-4, 11-5.
The Mariners scored four runs to open the seventh inning behind an RBI triple from Bransen Krebs, who scored off a single by Jonah Burke. Nyqolas Gillingham and Kade Schutzmann added an RBI apiece.
In the nightcap, the Bucs came back with a vengeance, tallying six runs in the third inning as the first five Bitterroot batters scored. Mission Valley couldn’t quite recover despite Gillingham’s 3-for-4 effort; he doubled and scored a run. Anthony Jones went 2 for 4 with an RBI and Jacob Harrod was 2 for 2 and walked twice.
The Mariners also traveled to Hamilton to take on the Bitterroot Red Sox Tuesday and will face the Glacier Twins today in Whitefish.
