The Polson Pirate boys’ basketball team fell to 2-3 in conference and 7-7 overall after picking up a solid win over 7-B opponent Eureka at home Feb. 2, before falling by one point to Northwestern A rival Columbia Falls in Polson Feb. 4.

The Pirates didn’t mind Eureka’s lengthy starting five, as Pirate big man Tyler Krell was able to get inside, scoring a game-high 19 points. Teammate Zach Camel also had a strong performance, and continues to put up big numbers for the Pirates, scoring 16, while Vince DiGiallonardo added 10.

Polson started strong, leading 18-13 after the first frame, and expanded its lead to 11 by halftime after a 24-18 run.

Polson continued to dominate in the third, outscoring the Lions 14-8, eventually coasting to a 67-49 victory.

The win improved Polson’s record to 7-6 overall, while Eureka fell to 5-10.

Tanner Blankers’ 14 points led Eureka, while Ryan Holder added 11.

On Saturday, Polson hosted Northwest A rival Columbia Falls in a barnburner, where the Wildcats held Polson scoreless in the third quarter to pick up a 43-42 win.

The Pirates jumped out to a convincing 17-6 lead after the opening frame, but the Wildcats clawed their way back in. C-Falls put up 20 points in the second to Polson’s 15 but still trailed 32-26 at the break.

In the third, Columbia Falls caught back up with 7-0 run, which proved to be the difference maker, as both teams put up 10 points each in the final frame, with the Wildcats winning by one, 43-42.

Camel led Polson with a game-high 17 points, while Ian Laimbeer added another seven.

For the Wildcats, Parker Johnson led the way with 16 points, while Anthony Correa added nine.

Coming up, Polson plays Corvallis on the road Feb. 9 and travels to Libby Feb. 11.
