Karl Sutton and his wife Darci Jones own and operate Fresh Roots Farm, a 15-acre certified organic vegetable farm northeast of Pablo at the base of the Mission Mountains. Their operation includes a moveable high tunnel and four acres of vegetable row crops and strawberries.
Fresh Roots Farm has made many adaptations to help them extend their growing seasons. In addition to selling fresh produce at farmers markets and wholesale through the Western Montana Growers Cooperative, they also grow vegetable seed sold throughout western Montana.
They have planted hundreds of trees and shrubs to increase beneficial insect habitat, buffer their fields from chemical drift, and act as a windbreak. They utilize crop rotation, reduced tillage, cover crops including cover crop cocktail mixes, biodegradable mulches, and micro-(drip)-irrigation.
