Chiefs fall to Troy, Deer Lodge

With only a week remaining before postseason play, the Ronan Chiefs fell to 7-9 overall after derailing Deer Lodge 52-44 and falling to Troy 47-42.
Against Deer Lodge, Ronan led early in the first, entering the second frame with a two point advantage, but a strong push in the second quarter by the Wardens tied the game at 13-13 entering the break.
In the third quarter the Wardens began burying the Chiefs in points, as Deer Lodge went on a 23-11 run, securing a solid 12-point lead at the beginning of the final frame. Ronan was able to put up 20 points in the fourth, but it was too little, too late, as Deer Lodge outlasted the Chiefs, winning 52-44.
For Ronan, Robbie Gauthier led the way with 11 points, while Marcus Hungerford tacked on another eight. Marley Tanner and Brady Oakland each contributed seven. The loss dropped Ronan to 2-5 in conference play.
With the win, Deer Lodge improved to 3-4 in conference and 9-6 overall. The Wardens were led by Hayden Benjamin’s game-high 24 points, while Rodney Hunter and Logan Dioron both tallied six.
On Saturday, the Chiefs looked to bounce back from a sluggish start to the week, taking on Troy at home.
Troy held the Chiefs to only three points in the opening frame, securing an early lead, 8-3. Ronan picked up its offense in the second, scoring 16 points, but Troy added another 15 to its point total, leading 23-19 heading into halftime.
The Chiefs continued to hang close with the Trojans in the second half, with Troy only leading by five as the final quarter got underway. The Chiefs tied Troy with 14 points in the final frame, giving the Trojans a 47-42 win.
Chris Clary led Ronan with 10 points, while Hungerford added another eight. Jalen Bell stepped up to contribute another seven, while Marley Tanner added eight.
Troy was led by Cory Orr’s impressive game-high 30 points, while Cody Orr tacked on another 11.
The Chiefs wrap up regular season play against Mission at home Feb. 7 and on the road against Columbia Falls Feb. 10.
