ARLEE — The battle between the Warriors and Bulldogs on Feb. 2 was a chess match with Arlee putting St. Ignatius in check in the final minutes of the game.
Before halftime, both teams battled back and forth, the score close from the beginning.
Arlee was up 16-13 at the end of the first quarter, the Bulldogs not letting the Warriors jump ahead too far.
With 3:23 left in the second quarter, Mission’s Nikko Alexander picked up a loose ball and scored a layup to edge the Warriors 22-25. The Bulldogs were ahead, but not for long, as Arlee’s Josh Reed put up two to close in 24-25. Then the Warriors’ Justin Adams tossed in a 3-pointer followed by a layup from Mark Fullerton to put the Warriors on top 29-25.
But the Bulldogs were not to be caged, as Stuart Grant sank two more points to close out the half 33-34.
The third quarter also ended with the Bulldogs and Warriors close. Arlee’s Junior Sansavere’s potential 3-pointer rattled out with the score 49-41.
The Bulldogs answered the call and started to build a comeback when Will Powell tossed in two followed by three more at the free throw line from Grant, who was fouled behind the 3-point arc. After swishing the last free throw, the score was 49-46 with Arlee ahead by three.
With two minutes left on the clock, Grant hit a three and Alexander scored another layup with 42 seconds left, making the score 60-58.
Then Alexander found an opening in the key, scoring to tie up the game, 60-60. With 9.2 seconds left the fourth, Sansavere put the Bulldogs in checkmate after he drove the ball in to score two points, 62-60.
At the other end of the court, Grant tried to even the score as time expired, but the shot bounced out. Dylan Evans pulled down the rebound, but his shot fell short as well. The Warriors won game, set and match 62-60 in Arlee.
“We answered the call and started good right off,” said Grant. “We’re pretty resilient.”
He led the Bulldogs with a game-high 25 points, including 10 in the fourth.
“Mission is a good team,” said Warrior Brandon Hergett. “We did well down low, but there is a lot of room for improvement, especially with districts coming up.”
Hergett led Arlee with 17 points.
After losing to Noxon 51-45 Feb. 3, Arlee is 4-5 in conference play and 7-8 overall. Mission is 1-6, 2-13 after a 48-37 loss to Loyola Feb. 4. Arlee faces Two Eagle Feb. 9 in Pablo, Charlo at home Feb. 10 and Hot Springs at home Feb. 11.
Mission travels to Ronan Feb. 7 and is at home against Troy Feb. 11.
