A caped superhero led the charge from the start and finished faster than a speeding bullet during Saturday’s benefit run for Salish Kootenai College’s Center for Prevention and Wellness.

Overall winner Robert Dempsey, 13, sped through the 5k run in 30 minutes, 40 seconds. He was followed by Sponge Bob, Superwoman and two mad scientists.

The Style 4 Miles Run 4 It event encourages participants to dress in crazy costumes and perform challenges at designated points.

Runners didn’t suspect how tough it was to jump over a small wading pool while riding a stick horse. As soon as young Everett Lozeau chose his stallion, the sprinklers came on, increasing the level of difficulty but offering a respite from the heat. Runners also stopped to roll a wiggly motorcycle tire around a goalpost.

Organizers and volunteers manned the water stations and challenge stops dressed as Dr. Seuss characters.

“It’s good to see people out doing something healthy, just enjoying wellness and just having fun,” volunteer Brandy Couture said.

The Center for Prevention and Wellness supports programs such as Women 4 Wellness, an annual health fair offering preventative education, health promotion, free screenings and testings with the goal to help women become involved in their health care and take the steps necessary to live healthy lives. The center also offers confidential HIV/AIDS testing and education on the campus; Native Women HOPE, a social-skills intervention program to reduce the risk of contracting sexual diseases; and the Tribal BEAR Project, an HIV/AIDS training for providers at tribal health clinics and substance abuse treatment centers throughout the northwest.
