Mariners finish 4th at Cloninger Classic

The Mariners A team had a busy weekend in Helena at the Lee Cloninger Classic Legion A Tournament, where the Polson squad joined a field of five other teams from Canada and Montana: the Helena Reps, Vauxhall (Alberta), the Lethbridge (Alberta) Giants, the Lethbridge Miners and the Laurel Dodgers.
Despite picking up a few good wins, including a 22-0 shutout over the Lethbridge Giants and a 10-3 win over the Lethbridge Miners, the Mariners struggled against Laurel and tournament host Helena. The Reps ended up downing the Mariners 9-3 in the third-place match Sunday afternoon, sending the Mission Valley team home with a fourth-place finish on the books.
Helena got off to a 7-1 lead in just three innings, and the Mariners couldn’t recover. Bransen Krebs, Anthony Jones and Karsen Krebs each drove in a run for the boys in blue.
On June 9 when the Mariners hosted the Kootenai Valley Rangers for a doubleheader, Derek Peel’s throwing arm and bat were red-hot in the first game as he led his team to a two-hit shutout, 6-0. He struck out five and was 2 for 4 at the plate.
In the nightcap, Mission Valley got out to a 3-0 lead before the Rangers came roaring back with four hits for four runs in the fourth inning. From there it was a back-and-forth battle for the lead, and the visiting Kootenai Valley team eventually stuck the win, 8-6.
Mission Valley also traveled to Libby on Monday and hosted the Glacier Twins on Tuesday. The team heads to the Omaha Adventure today through Tuesday, June 23.
