MISSOULA — Private health care insurance is a new option for many Native Americans as part of the Affordable Care Act. However, most Indian people are not aware of the new health care law and they don’t understand “insurance speak.” ACA has created unique opportunities for tribal members to get low cost-affordable insurance and brings new money into local Indian Health Service clinics and hospitals. When Native Americans purchase insurance, the insurance company pays the IHS provider for their medical care. Insurance coverage permits Indian people to control their own health care without cumbersome delays and often, denials rendered by the IHS.
PayneWest Insurance will provide information at the Women 4 Wellness Health Fair to help Native Americans explore the new option of private health insurance and they can enroll them throughout the year. Many Native Americans are eligible for 100 percent subsidies and zero cost sharing if they make at least $16,500 in annual income and are not eligible for employer’s insurance. Visit the PayneWest Insurance booth at the Women for Wellness Fair on May 14, 2015. To preregister, visit www.prevention.skc.edu.
