LAKE COUNTY — Lake County voters will have the opportunity in June and July to vote for or against a mil levy meant to provide funding for road maintenance equipment.
The 7.44 mil, two-year levy would raise $950,000 per year for road maintenance equipment. It would equal a $19.48 increase in taxes for a home with an assessed value of $100,000, and a $38.96 per year increase for a home with an assessed value of $200,000.
The county has proposed the purchase of eight dump trucks equipped with snow plows and sanding boxes, four one-ton pickups with sanding plows and snow boxes that will also be utilized as part of the year-round maintenance fleet.
Currently, nine trucks maintain more than 1,200 miles of county roads. The newest truck is a 2006 International. The average age of vehicles in the fleet is 18 years old. Large trucks in the fleet have each accumulated between 200,000 and 1,000,000 miles. Pickups in the fleet all have accumulated more than 200,000 miles.
In the past two years, repair costs have totaled $103,000.
