POLSON — The Polson Pirate wrestling squad launched off a thrilling 36-35 dual victory over the Libby Loggers Thursday night and into a slate full of wrestling matches at the Western Montana Duals in Ronan on Friday and Saturday.
The Pirates started out their Thursday dual against the Loggers with a loss at 215, but rebounded with three straight pins by heavyweight Kaden Thomas (55 seconds), 98-pounder Pat Sumner (1:25) and Craig Feistner (55 seconds). Jesse Alfiero also won the 119 match by pin, but Libby charged back with a string of three decisions, two of them major decisions.
The dual continued to seesaw, until the 171-pound match between top-ranked Brock Picard of Polson and Libby's Kyle Sweedman, who is third-ranked in Class A. After a 2-2 match entered the third period, Picard got a takedown to go up 4-2 and held on for the win.
That win put Polson up seven points. Libby won the last match at 189 by pin to earn six team points, but came up short at 36-35.
"Brock iced it for us ... That was a real good match," Polson head coach Bob Owen said, adding "The 135-pound match was another good one."
Polson's Jacob Young is ranked third in the state at 135 and Libby's Kyle Leir is ranked fifth. Young had previously beaten Leir in overtime in Libby, but the Logger had the edge Thursday night, edging Young 4-1 with a takedown in the third period that capped the win.
Polson won five of its seven duals on Friday and Saturday in Ronan.
On Friday Polson beat Plains-Hot Springs 84-6, Hamilton 63-24 and Arlee 66-24. On Saturday the Pirates lost to Frenchtown 47-36, lost to Ronan 41-37 and beat Flathead JV 72-6.
"Our kids wrestled pretty well. We had a tough match against Frenchtown and our 112-pounder Razz Walhood couldn't wrestle after spraining his neck on Friday. So, that hurt us," coach Owen said. "But Craig (Feistner) pinned the number-one ranked kid at 98 pounds (Glenn Hensley). I'm really excited about Craig ... he's really going to be hard to beat at that weight."
Picard went undefeated at 171 pounds, as did Feistner at 98. Thomas lost just one match to the second-ranked heavyweight from Hamilton.
"We had 29 kids in the tournament ... We sure got a ton of experience for them," coach Owen noted.
Whitefish was supposed to come down to Polson for a Tuesday night dual, but slick road conditions forced rescheduling of the match sometime in the future.
On Friday and Saturday, the Pirates will compete in the competitive Rocky Mountain Classic at Sentinel High School in Missoula. The tournament is full of Class AA schools from Montana and several big school teams from Coeur d'Alene. Friday's matches start at 11 a.m.
