POLSON – The Mission Valley Mariners opened up their home play with a pair of losses against the AA Kalispell Lakers bringing them to 2-4 on the season.
The Lakers drew first blood in the first half of the second inning in game one, but soon after the M’s came back to score three, jumping ahead until the Lakers put up four in the fourth. A dry rest of the contest left the Mariners with 0s as they fell to the Lakers 3-6.
Derek Peel took the hit from the mound, gaining his first loss of the season but not before tossing a trio of K’s and allowing only two walks.
Both of the M’s only two hits of the game came off Warren Wood’s bat as Wood went 2-3, picking up the solo RBI scored for Mariners.
In the nightcap, the Mariners’ bats warmed up, but stringing hits together to push runners past the plate was not working out well for the M’s as they left six on base, spread over seven innings.
Both Warren Wood and Peel went 2-3 at the dish with Wood landing on second with a double in both at-bats.
Russ Matt logged the loss from the hill after throwing three and two-thirds innings — pinned with six of the Lakers earned runs — but it was the relief that came in to finish out the game that dazzled the mound. Justin Young threw two and one-third innings, striking out one and giving up zero earned runs while Jacob Harrod closed shop, pitching the final inning. Out of Harrod’s 18 pitches thrown, 14 were strikes.
The Mariners will be hosting their annual Mother’s Day Tribute with a couple of home games May 10 then head to Missoula to take on the AA Mavs May 13.
