Lady Bulldogs end season with loss to Valley Christian

PABLO - The Lady Bulldogs opened the Western B Divisional Tournament with a win Thursday but dropped their next two to end the season 16-7.
Free throw shooting was a key factor in Mission's win Thursday as the Bulldogs sank 13-20 in a 39-29 win over Superior in the tournament's opening round. Kayla Mitchell and Loren Erickson each made four of six foul shots for Mission in the contest while the Bobcats struggled from the line throughout the contest. Superior had its chances at the line in the game as several Mission players fought foul trouble, including Stephanie Lewandowski who picked up three fouls in the opening quarter.
Mission was able to grab an 8-6 lead after eight minutes of play and used a 12-7 second-quarter run to build a 20-13 halftime advantage. Superior cut the lead to six after three quarters of play but Mission outscored the Bobcats 11-7 in the fourth to hold on for the win.
Mitchell led the way for Mission with 14 points in the win while Bryanna Steele added eight, Lewandowski and Erickson each scored six and Ashley Courville had five points.
Kaitlyn Koke led Superior with nine points.
Eventual tournament champion Loyola Sacred Heart proved to be too much for Mission Friday as the Breakers downed the Bulldogs 42-22 in the tournament’s semifinal round.
Mission kept pace with the Breakers in the opening quarter as the Bulldogs trailed just 9-8 after eight minutes of action. Loyola used a 12-5 second-quarter surge to build a 21-13 halftime lead but the Breakers still could not pull away. Mission trailed 29-17 heading into the fourth quarter, where Loyola used a 13-5 run to put the game out of reach for the Bulldogs.
Mitchell scored 12 in the loss to lead Mission while Erickson and Mackenzie Trudeau each added nine, Lewandowski scored eight and Steele and Cecilia Koskela added one point each.
The third quarter was the difference in Mission’s final game of the season Saturday as Valley Christian used a 14-4 run to pull ahead for good on the way to downing Mission 50-34.
The Bulldogs kept things close early as the Eagles led by just three after one quarter, 16-13. The Eagles added three more to their lead before halftime but the Bulldogs were still within striking distance at the half as Mission trailed 25-19.
Valley Christian built all the cushion it would need in the third quarter, outscoring Mission 14-4 to take a 39-23 lead into the final eight minutes of play. Both teams scored 11 points in the fourth quarter as the Eagles held on to get the win to eliminate Mission from the tournament.
Lewandowski led Mission with nine points in the loss while Mitchell added eight and Erickson scored seven. Steele scored five in the loss, Courville added three and Donilyn Rossbach scored two points.
Heidi Cross scored 17 to lead the Eagles.
