RONAN – They are usually up sunrise to sundown and sometimes well into the night, tending stock, growing crops, and making Lake County’s more than 1,000 farms and ranches tick while bringing millions of dollars each year to the local economy.
But Friday night was a time of rest from business. Instead, farmers and ranchers spent an evening with friends as more than 200 people gathered in Ronan for the Community Ag Dinner.
During the evening the Ronan High School Jazz Band performed as the crowd chowed down on locally-raised beef purchased from White’s Wholesale Meats and spuds from Fleming Farms in Pablo.
Both gut-busting humor and solemn nods were had as poet Barry Baker belted out some rhyme and verse dedicated to a rural agricultural way of life.
“The poems really relate to our lifestyle in the Mission Valley,” event organizer Jack Stivers said.
“I just enjoy agriculture,” Baker said of his poems. “I would really like to thank the Ronan Chamber for their commitment to agriculture. This is the 36th annual gathering, and I think I’ve been here as a speaker for around 30 of those.”
Ronan Chamber of Commerce Director Brandi Chisholm said it is an honor to put on the banquet year after year.
“Agriculture is truly the heart of Mission Valley,” Chisholm said. “Thank you all for making our community agriculture strong.”
