POLSON — The teepee went up in front of the Wander Inn on Feb. 20. A small woodstove provided heat for the teepee, and volunteers from the church and the community will be sleeping in it all week to raise awareness and funds for the growing number of homeless in the area.

Although temperatures are supposed to be in the 20s to 40s range with snow flurries, that beats the 2 degrees Fahrenheit and wind of last year’s inaugural teepee caper.

“We’re not coming in from the cold until we raise $6,000 for programs to aid homeless and hungry people in our community,” volunteer Sandy Farrell, Soup’s On coordinator wrote.

Last year’s funds paid for a new floor for Soup’s On, insulation for more warmth and efficiency, two new ovens and stainless steel racks for the kitchen area, according to Farrell. This year, the teepee funds will be used to remodel the older part of the church and add a bathroom so there will space for a homeless family and two single people.

“We average about 450 support days per year,” Journey Be Pastor John Payne said, including the current space for two people at Journey Be and rooms at a local apartment complex.

The week of Feb. 20 to 24 will be an open house. The Soup’s On project operates from the Wander Inn and provides hot soup, bread, dessert and warm beverages Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome, and donations are accepted but not necessary.

Entertainment will be available every evening from 5 to 7 p.m., and on Friday, Feb. 24, Family Table will be hosting a potato bar.

On Monday everyone is invited for game night. After performance on Tuesday by vocalists John D. and Margery, the The Great Scots bagpipers play on Wednesday, Thursday is Brit comedy night and Lorelei will sing music from the 70s on Friday evening.
