RONAN – The Ronan Police Department is fully armed with regulation guns and batons after Police Chief Ken Weaver purchased new equipment for officers in February.
City Councilmember Chris Adler inquired as to why the department purchased new guns in a March 2 meeting.
“What’s going on with the shotguns?” Adler said, peering at the bills list. “We never had any before?”
Weaver explained the gun purchases.
“We had a couple of pistol grip shotguns that I don’t believe are legal to use,” Weaver said. “So, we purchased four shotguns. One (was) good for use that was in the gun rack.”
The chief also purchased 26-inch long batons for officers.
“They are very nice looking,” Weaver said. “I issued them out and people went ‘What are these for?’ And I said, ‘These are batons.’ They asked what it was for and I said it’s a good intimidation factor. When you get out of your patrol car you put your baton in your ring and people will go ‘He’s going to hit me with that. I’m not going to do anything.’”
Additionally, the department is stocked with Tasers and body cameras that record officers’ actions.
