FLORENCE – At Florence, the fifth-ranked Ronan Chiefs were handed their first conference loss as Florence ended the game with a pair of touchdowns to pull away with a 31-14 win. With the win, Florence now has a one-game advantage in the battle for playoff position. Florence is 3-0 in conference and 6-1 overall, while Ronan fell to 2-1 in conference, and 6-2 overall.

“We made too many mistakes and were forced to play catch-up the rest of the way,” head coach Jim Benn said. “We gave up a kick return, had a fumble returned for a touchdown, and had a bad snap on a punt and were down 16-0 before we had even really started the game.”

For the Chiefs, Jack Humphreys finished the game with four carries for 66 yards and scored on a 23-yard touchdown run. Marcus Hungerford brought in the following touchdown on a 5-yard run.

Chiefs running back Jake Skelton finished the game with 30 carries for 134 yards.

The Ronan offense finished the game with 275 yards of rushing and 81 yards passing.

On defense, Ronan held Florence to 32 yards rushing on 22 attempts, and 146 yards passing on 12 of 20 completions.

Benn says his team needs to eliminate special team breakdowns and turnovers if they’re going to have a successful postseason run.

This week the Chiefs head to St. Ignatius to play Mission on the Bulldogs’ senior night. Benn says his team needs to work hard on taking care of the ball against the Bulldogs.

“They are very well coached and play extremely hard,” Benn said. “They are coming in on a two game winning streak and are playing at home on their senior night. We have to take care of the ball. Mission will run the ball effectively and has a very solid disciplined defense.”
