HAMILTON – Cole Rice of Arlee finished off his successful high school wrestling career the only way possible: Defending his title. Rice took down Bobby Ray of Powell County (Deer Lodge) in the championship round of the 145-pound weight class at the state tournament Saturday.

Rice won the match by major decision 11-1, taking home the gold medal. He finished off his career at Arlee 170-18 overall, and 42-2 for the season.

Rice went 4-0 in the 145 weight class Friday and Saturday, first by defeating Alex Roberts of Broadwater, then also defeating Travis Austin of Glasgow, before moving on to Lathan Crossland in the semifinals, and Bobby Ray in the championship bout.

It was during semifinals that Rice faced his toughest competition in Lathan Crossland of Cascade/Simms. Rice was greatly tested by Crossland, fighting for every point, but able to win the bout in the third period by a 12-10 decision. Arlee finished the tournament 16th overall, with 40 points.
