RONAN — In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service, AmeriCorp and Senior Corp, affiliates of the National & Community Service, specifically the Retired Senior Volunteer Program and the Foster Grandparents Program, recruited volunteers for K. William Harvey and Pablo Elementary classrooms to help spread the word about the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The event took place on Tuesday, Jan. 20. Younger or non-public school students can hear these stories at the Ronan District Library on Thursday, Jan. 22, during their reading time, which starts at 10:30 a.m.

Since 2012, hundreds of volunteers have served with MLK Read for Peace projects. This one to two-hour commitment involves reading age-appropriate books about Dr. King to youth in kindergarten through fourth grade. Reading will be followed by an interactive activity, such as writing poetry for the older students and artwork inspired by Dr. King’s legacy for younger students. An estimated 600 students in the two schools will be involved.

The impact of Dr. King’s work and life on American history is often not a required part of elementary curriculum. Although students enjoy a long weekend in observation of MLK Jr. Day every January, they may not understand the significance of this day.

MLK Read For Peace provides students with information about Dr. King and simple activities they can complete in the classroom or over the weekend. K. William Harvey Food Corp worker, Olivia DeJohn, will display the projects in prominent community locations.
