KALISPELL – The Polson cross country squad took on a challenging course and even tougher competition Saturday, Sept. 10 at the Flathead Invitational, but both the boys and girls came through with strong performances and encouraging results, head coach Matt Seeley said.
The boys varsity group managed five runners in the top 38 to take fourth place overall. The Polson boys stood tall against the three strongest Class AA schools in Northwest Montana, managing to finish ahead of Browning, Hamilton, and Columbia Falls, three of Polson’s largest rivals.
“Our boys’ team is capable of contending for a conference title and a high finish at state,” Seeley said. “Assistant coach Jenni Brown and I have been pleasantly surprised with the way this group works hard every day, runs together and puts team goals ahead of individual pursuits.”
On the girls’ side, Claudia Hewston and Tegan Bauer both improved their times compared to the same Kalispell meet last year, Seeley said. Hewston was the first Class A finisher to finish the race, completing the course in eighth place with a time of 20:29.The Polson girls finished eighth overall at the meet, after Bauer finished with a time of 21:49 and Hallie Hovenkotter’s 23:45 performance.
