Editor,

A recent request by Job Corps for prom dresses and tuxedos was somewhat surprising, considering Job Corps is a learning center. I called and suggested that they might teach the students to sew their own clothes for the prom. The sweet and polite young woman, to whom I talked, thought it was a good idea.

How important it is for the upcoming generation to learn life skills. When I was a boy, my mother taught me to sew on buttons and darn holes in my socks. This knowledge has served me well, although my beat up, arthritic hands and diminished eyesight have now limited my ability to thread a needle.

Another benefit of sewing one’s own clothes is that the ladies could incorporate modesty in their designs. It has become a challenge to find a prom dress that keeps the ladies from getting a chest cold! My wife and I would be happy to donate an extra sewing machine. I’m sure there are experienced seamstresses that would be willing to help.

While there is probably not enough time for this year’s prom, the idea could catch on for next year. Our youth need to learn that there may come a time when the computer will not solve all society’s needs and problems.

Creating a dress or altering a suit for a young man gives the sewer confidence and a feeling of self worth.
