RONAN — The public is invited to spend the evening of Dec. 31 enjoying a free meal of prime rib and salmon, “and lots of wonderful desserts,” according to organizer Roxana Colman-Herak.

The New Years dinner begins at Ronan Community Center with a non-alcoholic social time at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner from 7-8 p.m. Although the event is free, seating is limited to 210 people, so interested community members must RSVP in advance.

“We do want to show that the community cares,” Colman-Herak said. “It’s important that we gather and share space.”

Comedian Mitch Factor will provide entertainment during dinner. Throughout the past decade Factor has performed for thousands for people from Alaska to Germany, and in most of Indian country across the United States. His topics include children, relationships, teachers, aging and Indian way of life. Factor is a Seminole and Menominee Indian whose been involved in the Indian Head Start program for more than 20 years as a teacher and education manager.

Following dinner, Supaman (Christian Parrish) returns to the Flathead Indian Reservation after presenting his music at Arlee High School and Salish Kootenai College earlier this year.  Supaman is Crow nation hip-hop rapper and fancy dancer with a positive message of hope and encouragement. Supaman was named as Artist of the Week on MTV’s Iggy blog in March.

The alcohol-free evening is a safe way to usher in the new year, and to remember the importance of doing random acts of kindness, “those little things that make a big difference in peoples lives,” Colman-Herak said.

The grant-funded event is sponsored by the Suicide Prevention Program of Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribal Social Services.
