RONAN – Ronan Police Department likely follow the Montana Municipal Interlocal Authority’s suggested procedures for hiring police personnel in the future.
The Ronan City Council tentatively approved a first reading of the organization’s hiring procedures on Dec. 4.
Police Chief Ken Weaver said the hiring policies are very similar to what the city has in place currently, but will have a markedly different process for entry-level applicants to the force. Under the policy entry-level applicants will apply to a consortium that pre-screens the individuals. The cost of administering tests to the applicants are borne by the candidates themselves, and not the department. Mayor Kim Aipperspach asked that a line be added so that non-entry-level candidates also have to take state-required tests, because the department has had problems with upper level officers not having proper testing completed in the past.
“It will go into place after January 1,” Weaver said. “We have some applicants right now, and I don’t want them to have to redo everything.”
The policy will undergo a second reading in the future.
