VALLEY VIEW — The sign reads “Brennan, welcome home Marine,” and it’s flanked by two minions made from round straw bales.
The minions, characters from the movie “Despicable Me,” wear goggles made from tires and sit on a vintage truck, welcoming
Brennan Andrews, who recently came home on a 10-day leave from Camp Pendleton, California, according to proud dad Jeff Andrews.
Since the minions and sign are lighted, Brennan saw the lights when the family crested the hill on Eli Gap Road at about 1 a.m.
“His eyes just lit up when he saw the sign,” Jeff said.
Brennan just completed boot camp and spent some time in the Mission Valley before returning to active duty on Nov. 11.
It was a bittersweet visit since Brennan won’t be home for Thanksgiving. To make up for that, Jeff and his fiancé Michele made a turkey dinner with all the trimmings on Saturday.
“We didn’t want him to miss Thanksgiving,” Jeff said, adding that, “Brennan is doing what he’s dreamed of doing all his life.”
Brennan may be home for a couple of days at Christmas.
The Andrews children are far flung serving with their country with another Andrews brother joining the United States Air Force while a third works on becoming a “Coastie,” a member of the Coast Guard. The only Andrews sister attends an art institute in Arizona.
