Editor,
The reminder that "this too shall pass" is one way for me to calm down my anxieties or my knee-jerk reactions to something going on or something someone says that goes against my beliefs. And if I catch myself soon enough, I can actually calm down any strong emotions which may come up. I suppose we can all relate to this.
Case in point: Rush Limbaugh and his ranting about this and that, often manipulating the facts to suit his theme of anger and fear. "This too shall pass" is not referring to the demise of Rush Limbaugh or wishing him any ills. "This too shall pass" goes to the very heart of a belief of mine that when all the stuff we humans do to screw up our lives and our world, there is a power that undergirds everything and everyone, and which ultimately moves people and circumstances in the direction of balance, love, peace, order and healthy relationships.
I was reading a piece by Michael Winship on the Internet today. He referred to "Old Motormouth Limbaugh" and his uninformed comments on his radio program about Sudan's "Lord's Resistance Army." Rush was defending the LRA because they are Christians and are fighting the Muslims in Sudan. And Rush was ranting at Obama for not having more troops in Sudan supporting the LRA.
As Winship reports, in fact, "The LRA is a rabid rebel group that for 25 years has made simple day-to-day existence a living hell for civilians, especially children."
Winship further states this: "In the Gospel According to Rush, the enemy of my enemy is my friend, even if said friend engages in murder and mutilation."
"This too shall pass" surely applies here, too, just as with everything else. I just need to be reminded that underneath, behind, surrounding and enfolding everything going on in our lives today is that power that undergirds and moves people and circumstances in the direction of balance, love, peace, order and healthy relationships.
We are all in this together, even if Rush and I disagree on so many issues. Earth is a classroom and hopefully we are listening to our powerful teacher.
