News from St. Luke Community Hospital
RONAN - St. Luke Community Healthcare will once again become a training venue for family practice residents starting Oct. 20. Five medical residents will be working at St. Luke during the next seven months as part of the Family Medicine Residency Program of Western Montana (FMRWM), experiencing the challenges and opportunities of rural healthcare.
Residents are newly-graduated medical doctors who must complete at least three additional years of graduate medical education in an accredited intensive physician training program before they can apply for their board certification within a specialty.
“This is a great learning environment” said Steve Todd, St. Luke chief executive officer. “Our physicians are really great teachers and several of the residents indicated they have learned more here in four weeks than in four months elsewhere. Dr. Heather Jones is our faculty advisor and liaison to the residents and has done an exceptional job setting up the program.”
The program is expected to benefit not only the residents, but also patients, the hospital, and the local family practice physicians who will mentor the young doctors. While residents learn from local physicians, the physicians will absorb new ideas and emerging research in return, Todd said.
The rural rotation calls for one resident at a time to spend four weeks at St. Luke. While the residents may spend time with all the physicians including specialists, they will mainly be supervised by Dr. Paul Gochis, Dr. Heather Jones, Dr. Cara Harrop, and Dr. Hikmat Maaliki, who are all board certified in family medicine.
Dr. Ben Grass who has started his second year at FMRWM, will begin his second rotation at St. Luke Community Hospital and the outlying clinics within St. Luke Community Healthcare this month.
Ben enjoys cycling, nordic skiing, cooking, working on cars, bicycles, home projects and rural life.
