WHITEFISH - Anna DiGiallonardo continued her strong season for the Lady Pirate track team at the A.R.M. Invitational Saturday, placing in all five of her events to help lead Polson to a third-place finish despite cold, wet conditions.
"It was not the best day for a track meet, but we did well," coach Bob Gunderson said. "It alternated between clouds, rain, wind and, on a few instances, sunshine. Mostly, it was cold and wet. We are doing some good things on the track, though, but we need to pick it up in some of our field events."
DiGiallonardo had a top finish in the 200-meter dash Saturday as she came in second for the Lady Pirates with a time of 23.54. She was also third in the 100-meter dash, fifth in the long jump and ran as a member of the second-place 1,600-meter relay team and the third-place 400-meter relay team.
Mesa Starkey picked up the only top finish for the Lady Pirates at the meet as she picked up first-place honors in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 12:01.52. Starkey was also fourth in the 800-meter run. Fellow distance runner Claudia Hewston also did well at the meet, coming in fourth in the 1,600-meter run and fifth in the 800-meter event.
Senior Breanne Kelley ran her fastest 300-meter dash time since she was a sophomore as she finished second with a time of 47.54 seconds. Kelley was also third in the 100-meter hurdles and ran on both relay teams for the Lady Pirates.
"Breanne continues to work hard and her results are showing it," Gunderson said.
Sierra Pete continues to perform well as she continues to make her comeback from a pair of ACL surgeries. Pete finished fifth in the 400-meter run and ran on both relay teams.
"She (Pete) is doing quite remarkable, considering the two ACL operations she has endured over the last two years," Gunderson said.
Jewel Zakit-Ackerman finished fifth in the discus for the Lady Pirates with a toss of 92 feet, nine inches while the 400-meter relay team of Katie Finley, Pete, Kelley and DiGiallonardo was third. The Lady Pirate 1,600-meter relay team of DiGiallonardo, Pete, Hewston and Kelley was second in their race with a time of 52.05 seconds.
The Lady Pirates finished third as a team with 68 points, coming in behind Whitefish (80) and Glacier (105).
On the boys' side of things, the Pirates compiled 30 points to finish seventh at the meet behind Ronan-St. Ignatius (36), Thompson Falls (39), Whitefish (46), Libby (57.5), Columbia Falls (84) and Glacier (134).
Once again, the Pirates' pole vaulters led the way for Polson as Brock Bleazard was second after clearing 12 feet while Drew Fouty and Zion Lee both cleared 11 feet, six inches and tied for sixth-place.
Lee, who is nursing an ankle injury, did not compete in three of his normal events at the meet as he skipped the 110-meter hurdles, the 300-meter hurdles and the 1,600-meter relay.
Runner Jimmy Bjorge set a new personal milestone at the meet, finishing the 1,600-meter run in less than five minutes to come in third. Bjorge finished with a time of 4:55.73.
"He has always been a hard worker and it paid off for him Saturday," Gunderson said.
Chris Cote ran the 800-meter race for the Pirates for the first time Saturday, finishing fourth with a time of 2:10.44. Gunderson said he has plans to use Cote in two races later in the season.
"We will try to double him up in the 400 and 800 the rest of the season and, hopefully, we will see good results when the divisional track meet gets here in three weeks," Gunderson said.
Clark Rubel and Riley Sampson both turned in personal bests in the discus for Polson at the meet, but did not place in the event. Rubel did place in the shot put, coming in fifth. Sampson also threw a personal best at the shot put ring, but did not place.
Alex Nystrom finished fifth in the 3,200-meter run for the Pirates, Mike Devlin was sixth in the 400-meter run and the 400-meter relay team was third with a time of 45.90 seconds.
Both teams will be back in action Tuesday at the Lake County Meet in Ronan before traveling to Kalispell for the large Archie Roe Meet Saturday.
