On the ball: Lady Pirates win 3 of 4 games this week

The Lady Pirates picked up three more wins this week as they downed Whitefish and Columbia Falls in conference matchups before splitting a pair of games at the Frenchtown Tournament Saturday.
The Pirates pick up another blowout win over the Lady Bulldogs Tuesday as Polson won at Whitefish, 40-0.
Just weeks after blasting Whitefish 46-0, the Lady Pirates offense was on a roll again at Whitefish Tuesday as Polson scored 14 runs in both the second and fourth innings.
Sallie Sams led the way at the plate for the Lady Pirates, going 3-4 with a pair of homeruns while driving in seven. Heidi Rausch went 4-4 with a pair of doubles and three RBI while Ashley Johnson went 3-5 with a double and drove in three runs.
Shay Duford finished with five hits in the win, Makaliah Wilson and Martina Marquardt both had four, Kodi Woods, Kayla Duford and Kylie Knutson all had two hits and Stephanie Engel and Colleen Jacobson each added one.
Polson jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one-half inning of play and then added 14 more runs in the top of second. The Pirates scored just one in the third but added 14 more in the fourth to push the lead to 32-0. Polson added eight more in the fifth as the Lady Pirates cruised to the win. Polson had 31 hits in the victory.
Shay Duford picked up the win for Polson after pitching three shutout innings while Jessica Bagnell pitched the final two innings.
Whitefish managed just one hit in the loss.
Polson used a seven-run inning to roll past visiting Columbia Falls in Polson Thursday as the Lady Pirates picked up a 12-4 victory.
Both squads came into the matchup undefeated in Northwestern A Conference play, but Polson made things look easy as the Lady Pirates had no trouble getting the bat on the ball in the contest.
Both Sams and Rausch went 3-4 at the plate in the win while Shay Duford led in RBI with three.
Woods got the Polson offense going with a lead-off triple to left in the bottom of the opening inning and scored on a ground ball to second by Ashley Johnson to put the Lady Pirates up 1-0.
An error and a single helped the Wildkats tie the score at 1-1 in the top of the second inning but Polson put the game away with seven runs in the bottom-half of the frame.
Knutson got things started with a lead-off single to left field and moved to second on a wild pitch. Wilson drew a walk and Marquardt loaded the bases with a ground ball to third. Knutson crossed the plate as Woods drew a walk to put Polson up 2-1 and Johnson reached on an error as Wilson scored to push the lead to 3-1. Shay Duford reached first on a fielder’s choice ball to short as Marquardt scored and Sams followed with a double to left to drove in Johnson and Shay Duford to give Polson a 6-1 lead. Rausch brought in Sams with a single to right and then later scored on a ground ball by Kayla Duford to put the Lady Pirates up 8-1 after two innings of play.
Wilson launched a ball off the scoreboard in left center for a homerun to put Polson up 9-1 in the bottom of the third inning but the Wildkats started creeping back into the game in the top of the fourth.
Three singles and a fielder’s choice ball to second led to a pair of runs for Columbia Falls in the top of the fourth as the Wildkats cut the Polson lead to 9-3.
Singles by Shay Duford and Rausch helped lead to another Polson run in the bottom of the inning as Kayla Duford brought in her sister with a sacrifice fly to put Polson up 10-3.
Columbia Falls added another run in the top of the fifth inning to cut the Lady Pirate lead to 10-4 but the Wildkats would not score again.
Duford and Rausch both crossed the plate for Polson in the sixth inning as the Lady Pirates added two more runs on their way to a 12-4 victory.
Shay Duford picked up the win for the Lady Pirates, giving up four runs (two earned) on seven hits while striking out eight and walking two in a complete-game performance.
The Lady Pirates came up short against Butte Central at the Frenchtown Invitational Saturday. The Lady Pirates scattered nine hits but could not get any runners across the plate as the Maroons picked up a 3-0 victory.
Knutson was 3-3 at the plate for Polson in the loss while Johnson, Shay Duford, Sams, Kayla Duford, Wilson and Marquardt all added hits.
The Lady Pirates bounced back with a big win over Loyola Sacred Heart later in the day as Polson scored 12 runs in the seventh inning en route to a 19-2 victory.
Polson led just 3-2 after four innings of play but the Lady Pirates scored 16 runs in the final three innings to pull away for a lopsided win.
Sams led the way for Polson going 4-5 at the plate with a homerun and six RBI. Stephanie Angle went 1-2 with a triple and drove in four runs while Rausch went 4-5 for Polson in the win.
Shay Duford struck out six and walked none to pick up her seventh win of the season. She is now 7-3.
The Lady Pirates will be back in action at Glacier Tuesday before playing at Libby Thursday. Polson will host both Hamilton and Corvallis Saturday.
