CHARLO — Charlo School Board has delayed hiring coaches for spring sports until its October board meeting, so that its members can consult with school officials to evaluate the coaching staffs’ needs.
An evaluation committee consisting of the athletic director, coaches, teachers, and school board members is expected to meet in the next month to see if the school needs more or fewer coaches.
Board Chairman Shane Reum said the board’s decision in no way reflects on the merits of the five coaches that were up for hire at the board’s Sept. 16 meeting, but instead represents the board’s commitment to fulfill the evaluation that is required by the district’s policy.
The board has not completed the evaluation in the past year.
“We’re just trying to set the precedent where we meet before we hire, and not hire before we meet,” Reum said. “Why meet if we’ve already hired and got the coaches?”
Superintendent Thom Peck said it is difficult for the board to find the right time to meet because coaches are approved well in advance of their sports, with a hiring round never far around the corner.
“There never seems to be a good time,” Peck said. “ But I agree that it makes a lot better sense to meet before hiring.”
Board member LaDonna Fryberger said that can’t be an excuse.
“There’s never a good time,” Fryberger said. “You just make time.”
In other business the board approved a project that will replace lightbulbs in the elementary school. It also agreed to begin reworking its teacher evaluation process.
The next regularly scheduled Charlo School Board meeting will take place on Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. in the high school library.
